Due to the fast spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout Australia and abroad, many of us have found ourselves feeling unprepared for what the future might bring. Like our finances and health, estate planning is an important factor to consider when looking to better protect ourselves and our loved ones during times of uncertainty. Estate planning involves implementing strategies that deal with your assets for when you pass away, or if you are unable to manage your affairs – whether that be financial or medical.

Such strategies include ensuring that your Will, Powers of Attorney and Advance Care Directive are up to date to clearly state your needs and wishes. Adelta Legal can also provide advice for more complicated strategies such as dealing with superannuation, companies and trusts.

Why should I review my Will and Power of Attorney?

As COVID-19 has shown, circumstances can change very quickly and often with very little warning. We therefore encourage everyone to review their wills and Power of Attorney every 5 to 10 years to cater for current and future needs.

The most common circumstances for reviewing a will and Power of Attorney include:

• A change in a relationship (i.e. marriage, divorce, separation or entering a domestic partnership);

• Your assets or financial position has changed; or

• Changes with family and friends (i.e. births, deaths and changes in relationships).

Our Process During This Time

Adelta Legal is committed to providing clients with a safe and efficient service during these challenging times. Social distancing, modified office hours and strict hygiene practices have been implemented in all of our offices (including our Tea Tree Gully and Morphett Vale branches) to ensure the safety of all clients and staff at all times.

Where possible, initial appointments can now be done by telephone or by video communications, using programs such as Zoom. Our other usual methods of contact, email and drafts via the post, remain unchanged.
